Lansing, MI – Democrats picking winners and losers is a familiar game in Lansing. But the revival of an old failed plan takes that game to a new level.
House Democrats have a plan to reinstate film tax credits, a failed relic of the Granholm Administration that cost Michigan taxpayers half a billion dollars with a terrible return on investment. The plan was so ineffective during its first iteration, that Michigan ended up with fewer film jobs than before the program began.
If the Hollywood handout sequel is enacted in Lansing, Michigan taxpayers can expect to foot the bill at a whopping $2 billion over the next decade.
“We’ve seen this movie before and it got terrible reviews. Film credits amount to nothing more than massive handouts and empty promises – and Michigan taxpayers, who now more than ever could use their own tax break, are left to foot the bill,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “There’s no greater slap in the face to Michiganders than handing out tax dollars to Hollywood elites while we get a tax hike back home. Voters spoke loud and clear this election: they are done with this game of picking winners and losers. Democrats would be wise to listen to Michiganders and leave failed film credits in the past.”
While Democrats have flirted with reviving this failed plan during Lame Duck, House and Senate Republican leaders in Lansing have been firm in opposition.
