Lansing, MI – Today, House Republicans passed a common-sense plan to fix the roads, without raising taxes.
The plan would ensure every penny in taxes paid at the pump goes towards our roads, bringing an end to Michigan’s nearly highest in-the-nation diversion rate. The plan also repurposes billions of tax dollars currently being wasted on corporate handouts and bloated bureaucracy.
“For years politicians have talked about ‘fixing the roads’ without offering long-term, tangible, fiscally sustainable solutions. In a matter of months House Republicans accomplished what Lansing has failed to do for over a decade – pass a plan that finally invests in our local roads without asking taxpayers to fork over more dollars,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Democrats’ insistence on tax hikes to fix the roads is laughable when we consider that state spending has increased 43% since Governor Whitmer took office. We already have the resources to fix the roads, we just need leaders in Lansing who prioritize investing in the basics over investing in bloated bureaucracy and corporate handouts.”
While Republicans advance this revenue-neutral roads plan, Democrats have proposed raising taxes on small businesses to “fix the damn roads.”
