Whitmer Touts Recovery As 300,000 Fewer People Are Working Than Before Her Shutdowns
State Residents Receiving Unemployment Benefits 25% Higher than February 2020
LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Freedom Fund Executive Director Tori Sachs today challenged Governor Gretchen Whitmer to come back to reality and to do the real work necessary to fix a state economy devastated by 15 months of state-mandated closures and restrictions.
Whitmer this afternoon bizarrely heralded the state’s latest employment figures, despite the fact that nearly 300,000 fewer Michiganians are working today than in February 2020 before the Governor forced businesses across the state to close – many permanently. According to the latest figures, the number of state residents receiving unemployment benefits remains 25% higher than the month before Whitmer’s job-killing executive orders.
“Nearly 300,000 fewer of our friends and relatives are working today than before the Governor seized unilateral control of the state’s economy,” said Sachs. “300,000 less people working than a year ago is nothing to brag about, Governor. Recovery means getting people back on the job – not permanently out of the market for work.”
“Recovery starts with ending the Governor’s grip on employers, rescinding her proposed permanent COVID workplace rules, getting kids back into the classroom full-time and encouraging and allowing residents to get back to work.”
