Lansing, MI – New data reaffirms what Michiganders already know: our economy is in rough shape.
Michigan’s unemployment rate in May was 5.4%, over 1% higher than the national average. This comes on the heels of a US Bureau of Labor Statistics report that found Michigan with one of the worst unemployment rates in the nation, putting us in worse shape than New York and California.
“Thanks to Lansing Democrats, Michigan has one of the weakest economies in the nation. Our excessive red tape and high costs are driving jobs out of Michigan, leaving Michigan workers with fewer opportunities to earn a living and provide for their families. Job providers will continue to pass on investing in Michigan until we see serious change in Lansing,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund.
The new state data confirmed employment in Michigan dropped by 5,000 in May. This also comes as Michigan-based Autocam Medical announced a 300-job expansion in neighboring Indiana, a Right to Work state with a lower tax burden than Michigan.
