Freedom Fund: Whitmer Wrong to Lash Out at Supreme Court, Legislature
Governor’s Decision to Politicize Pandemic Response Already Hampering Battle against COVID-19
LANSING, MI, October 6, 2020 – Michigan Freedom Fund Executive Director Tony Daunt today asked Governor Gretchen Whitmer to stop politicizing the state’s response to COVID-19, and to do what residents and state lawmakers have asked her to do for months – work with their elected representatives in the legislature instead of violating Michigan’s constitution.
“Governor Whitmer spent the last six months ignoring pleas from the state legislature that she work with them to meet the needs of local families in the midst of a global pandemic,” said Daunt. “The Supreme Court declared her actions unconstitutional and asked her to work with lawmakers. She responded today by lobbing insults at the Court and launching partisan attacks against her legislative partners at a time when residents need partnership, not politics.
“Whitmer’s decision today to crassly politicize this pandemic only further erodes the public’s trust in the Governor and her administration’s ability to lead. The state is scrambling today as a direct result of her illegal, unconstitutional leadership over the last half-year – not the legislature’s.”
