Media Outlets across Michigan Sue to Protect the Constitution, the Public’s Right to Know
“Michigan’s constitution couldn’t be more clear – the commission is a public body, it’s required to do its work in public, and the public gets access to the work it does on their behalf. Today’s Supreme Court hearing is a critical step towards transparency, but the next step must be towards accountability. By hiding public documents and holding secret meetings, the so-called Independent redistricting commission has destroyed the integrity of the entire map-drawing process.”
The Supreme Court is hearing arguments today in the case against the Commission brought by the Michigan Press Association, the Detroit News, the Detroit Free Press, and Bridge Michigan, related to an unconstitutional closed session and secret redistricting documents from October 27.
