Whitmer Veto Punishes Kids, Parents
In Battle Between Union Leaders and Michigan Students, Whitmer Chooses the Wrong Side
LANSING, Mich. – Governor Whitmer vetoed legislation that would have empowered parents and helped Michigan students recover from learning losses suffered as a result of her school shutdowns. Michigan Freedom Fund executive director Tori Sachs condemned the move in a statement.
“Just days ago, Terry McAuliffe lost the Virginia gubernatorial race because he said parents shouldn’t have a say in their students’ education, but Governor Whitmer didn’t just say it – she did it,” said Sachs. “Whitmer’s callous veto today denies parents the ability and resources to ensure their kids get the education that works for them. Whitmer put teachers’ union allies ahead of the educational needs of a million Michigan students who needed help recovering from the learning losses they suffered as a result of Whitmer’s school shutdowns.”
The bills would have allowed taxpayers to invest directly in the education of Michigan kids through Michigan Student Opportunity Accounts for families who qualify for free-and-reduced school lunch, those at or below 200% of the free-and-reduced lunch eligibility, and families of students with special needs.
