Welcome back! Without further ado, here are Gov. Whitmer’s Top Five Transparency Fails!
#5: Michigan State Police Encrypted App Scandal
Gov. Whitmer said she’d prohibit the use of personal email to do government business – but on her watch, the Michigan State Police was busted using an encrypted messaging app to circumvent FOIA.
#4: Nursing Home Data
Just like NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Gov. Whitmer ordered COVID patients into nursing homes and long-term care facilities, but we still don’t know the full aftermath of that decision. Stonewalled by the governor, journalists are resorting to lawsuits to get the information.
#3: No Metrics to Reopen Michigan
She claims to be following “science and data,” but a year into the pandemic, Gov. Whitmer still refuses to disclose what metrics we need to hit as a state before she’ll relinquish her unilateral power. The only “science” she’s interested in is POLITICAL SCIENCE!
#2: Hush Money Payouts
Gov. Whitmer has had a number of high-profile resignations from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Unemployment Insurance Agency and the MEDC. These resignations were accompanied by hefty severance packages with confidentiality agreements that prevent them from talking about the nature of their separation – a clear violation of the public trust.
And Governor Whitmer’s #1 Transparency Fail:
Failing to follow through on her campaign promise to extend FOIA to the Governor’s office, even without legislative action. Gov. Whitmer promised to expand the Freedom of Information Act to include the Governor’s office. Two years later, it still hasn’t happened.
