Lansing, MI – Today, Michigan Democrats are taking up a bill in committee that would impose a roughly $70 million tax on water bills for households across Michigan. Democrats are looking to create a taxpayer-funded bail-out for those who do not pay their water bills, which would be supported through a “monthly charge on everyone’s water bills,” with the ability to raise the tax yearly, according to MIRS.
The initial cost could raise taxes by as much as $70 million in the first year. The proposed tax has already received strong opposition from local leaders, such as Macomb County Public Works Commissioner, Candice Miller.
“Democrats are increasing taxes and simultaneously watering down the quality of life in Michigan,” said Mary Drabik, Communications Director for the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Instead of throwing Michigan families a life preserver amidst Bidenflation, Democrats continue to dip into the pockets of taxpayers to expand the already bloated size of government. It’s time for Democrats to put the interests of Michigan taxpayers first, not their extreme ideology.”
This proposed tax comes after Democrats have already crippled Michigan’s economy with a slew of new taxes – including but not limited to:
- Income and payroll tax increases: Attorney General Dana Nessel unilaterally reversed what was supposed to be a permanent income tax cut for Michigan families.
- Increased electric rates: The Michigan Democrats’ ‘Green New Deal’ would increase electric rates and cause more blackouts.
- Increased ‘fees’: Democrats increased taxes labeled as ‘fees’ for businesses and nonprofits, vehicle registrations, and marriage ‘fees’ which could double.
