Whitmer Refuses to Condemn Escalating Violence
LANSING, MI – The Michigan Freedom Fund is demanding Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemn the acts of violence against pro-life supporters and pregnancy centers after an 83-year-old pro-life activist was shot while going door to door in Lake Odessa last week. Since the attack, Whitmer has continued to use her “fight like hell” call to action several times, contributing to fears it will incite additional acts of violence.
Earlier today, Whitmer refused to take questions from the media at an event in Grand Ledge.
“Governor Whitmer must immediately stop fanning the flames of violence with her dangerous ‘fight like hell’ rhetoric, which has led to the shooting of an 83-year-old pro-life canvassing volunteer,” said Tori Sachs, executive director of the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Political violence against pro-life pregnancy centers have escalated and Whitmer’s incendiary remarks only encourage future violent acts.”
Radical extremists have been encouraged by Whitmer’s “fight like hell” rhetoric. On September 22, Fox 2 Detroit reported that militant extremists had vandalized a pregnancy center in Southfield for the second time, leaving a graffiti threat behind that reads, “If abortion isn’t safe, neither are you.”
The Pregnancy Care Center of Petoskey was vandalized in August. Pregnancy centers in Jackson and Dearborn were attacked in June. Windows and doors were shattered at the Pregnancy Center of Eaton County earlier this year. Whitmer has refused to condemn the acts of violence.
