Citizens Redistricting Commission Establishes “Independence” Precedent
Commission Rejects Staff Candidacy of Democrat Activist after Previously Rejecting Staff Candidates Due to Ties to Republican Party
LANSING, MI, December 17, 2020 – Michigan Freedom Fund Executive Director Tony Daunt today thanked the state’s Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission for establishing a precedent of independence in its hiring decisions, by rejecting the candidacy of a partisan Democratic candidate to serve as the organization’s general counsel.
Commissioners weeks ago also explicitly rejected the candidacy of individuals for another staff position because of those candidates’ ties to the Republican Party.
“Commissioners today established a precedent of independence in their hiring decisions,” said Daunt. “Voters expect and demand a truly independent redistricting process. It’s what they voted for.”
