Lansing, MI – For six years Governor Whitmer has failed to deliver on her promise to fix the damn roads. But instead of working across the aisle and supporting Republicans’ revenue-neutral plan, Lansing Democrats are rolling out a plan of their own filled with fee increases on Michigan drivers.
The new Democrat roads plan squeezes drivers for more dollars on three new fronts:
- Raises our gas tax from 30 to 49 cents per gallon.
- Increases our annual vehicle registration fees by $100.
- Adds tolls to our busiest roadways (locations and fees TBD by a new Whitmer-appointed board.)
It’s noteworthy that these fee increase proposals are coming from the same party that’s increased state spending by 43%, burned through a 9 billion-dollar surplus, and wasted billions of tax dollars on corporate handouts and pork projects.
“Apparently Democrats haven’t learned a single lesson from the 2024 Elections. Not a single Michigander is asking Lansing to take more money out of their pockets right now, they’re demanding Lansing lower costs and get smarter with the dollars they already have,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “It’s clear as day that Lansing already has the tools and resources to fix our roads. We don’t need more money to make it happen, we need leaders in Lansing willing to step up, cut the waste, and get back to the basics.”
House Republicans’ road funding plan does just that, repurposing existing tax dollars without asking taxpayers for a penny more.
