LANSING, MI – Today, Michigan Democrats pulled the plug on reliable and cost-saving energy standards for Michigan families. In a party-line vote, House Democrats passed their ‘Green New Deal’ policies that force Michiganders off of reliable energy sources by 2040, mandate the use of wind and solar energy, as well as a bill that strips municipalities of their zoning authority for energy projects while handing that power to Lansing bureaucrats appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The extreme policies will increase energy rates for Michiganders by an estimated $2,746 a year. In total, “the energy bill package being considered by the Michigan Legislature would cost ratepayers at least $200 billion,” according to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

Democrats also passed a bill to strip municipalities of their zoning authority for ‘clean energy’ projects. This overreach of state government takes away all local government and citizen control and places it in the hands of unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats in Lansing.

“Thanks to Democrats, Michigan can look forward to a dark future unreliably powered by costly energy sources,” said Mary Drabik, Communications Director for the Michigan Freedom Fund. “The Democrats’ ‘Green New Deal’ is turning out to be a ‘Big Green Payout’ for utility providers who can increase profits on the backs of consumers; it’s also a slap in the face to municipalities and residents of this state who deserve control of their own backyards. Democrats can’t help themselves from making our lives less convenient and more expensive.”
