Lansing, MI – 270,000 Michiganders have had no voice in the 35th State Senate District for 81 days and counting with no end in sight. Governor Whitmer is playing politics with the vacancy, and apparently, State Representative Amos O’Neal is giving her cover.
In a video exclusively obtained by Michigan Freedom Fund, State Representative Amos O’Neal expresses a desire for the SD 35 vacancy to be filled and a frustration that his office is receiving an increased workload as a result of the vacancy.
But despite all that, O’Neal is refusing to join the ever-growing list of Michiganders calling on Governor Whitmer for action, claiming “it’s not Amos O’Neal’s job… that’s a distraction I don’t need,” and later “I’ve got a lot more fish to fry.”
“For 81 days and counting, Rep. O’Neal’s community has had no voice in the State Senate. Saginaw area taxpayers are stuck in Governor Whitmer’s political crosshairs. If stepping up for his community isn’t O’Neal’s job right now, then I don’t know what the hell is,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director of Michigan Freedom Fund. “For the 270,000 Michiganders lacking half of their representation in Lansing, this isn’t a distraction. It’s taxation without representation. It’s blatant political gamesmanship. And when it comes to O’Neal’s inability to hold Whitmer accountable, it’s political cowardice.”
Just weeks ago, O’Neal and the governor’s staff received questions on the vacancy in a now-viral exchange.
