Fire Them: Another Day, Another Illegal Teacher Strike in Detroit

DETROIT, MI, January 7, 2016 –The Michigan Freedom Fund today renewed its call on Detroit Public Schools and policymakers in Lansing to pursue every option to stand up to union bullies in Detroit, after teachers again walked out of their classrooms to flex their union muscles, leaving Detroit students at Renaissance and Martin Luther King, Jr. High Schools without their teachers and on the street.

“Detroiters deserves teachers who are committed to the kids in their classroom, not bullies who use children as political pawns,” said Terri Reid, President of the Michigan Freedom Fund.  “No wonder so many Detroit parents are turning to charter and other area schools.

“Time after time, teacher union bullies in Detroit have put innocent kids out onto the street.  It’s time for the District to put an end to these illegal strikes and terminate employees who violate the law immediately.”

Today’s illegal teacher strike is at least the 6th in Detroit in recent months, resulting in thousands of students missing tens of thousands of days of cumulative classroom time.

Union activists have already shut down multiple schools in January, shut down 10 Detroit schools in December, and many others earlier in the semester, all without advance notice to parents, locking hundreds of children at a time out of their classrooms.
