Lansing, MI – During her tenure as Governor, Gretchen Whitmer has talked the talk but failed to walk the walk in Lansing.

According to a new study from Bridge Michigan, Governor Whitmer has failed to deliver on nearly half of her promises to Michigan taxpayers. Some of the most noteworthy broken promises include:

  • Transparency expansion: Whitmer still hasn’t delivered key tenets of her “Michigan Sunshine Plan,” including FOIA expansion, and a lobbying “cooling off” period for former legislators.
  • Veto of “referendum proof” bills: When Governor Whitmer signed the Right to Work Repeal in 2023, she broke her promise to veto referendum proof legislation.

“On multiple fronts, Governor Whitmer has failed to deliver on the promises she’s made to Michigan taxpayers. Even after six years in office, two of which her party had full control of Lansing, she still hasn’t fulfilled major promises she made,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “Whitmer faces a choice in her last two years as Governor: she can either double down on her failed, partisan, ‘my way or the highway’ approach to governing, or she can try something new and actually work with Republicans to deliver on common sense solutions.”

Republicans will hold a majority in the State House for the remainder of Whitmer’s time as Governor. House Republicans have a clear, consistent record of supporting transparency reforms and a common-sense roads plan that doesn’t raise taxes.
