Lansing, MI – Today, House Democrats shocked Michigan’s tipped workers when they voted against a bipartisan tipped wage bill that would save approximately 60,000 jobs under immediate threat, and secure the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of tipped wage workers across the state.

Luckily with their new House majority, Republicans obtained the 56-vote threshold needed to advance the bill to the Michigan Senate, where it is in jeopardy of failing under the Democrat majority leadership.

“The vote taken today by House Democrats to jeopardize hundreds of thousands of tipped wage workers’ jobs and countless Michigan small businesses is an inexcusable dereliction of duty,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Now that the bill has advanced to the Democrat-led Senate, despite House Democrat opposition, it is imperative that Senate Democrats vote to fix the mess they created and put the well-being of the workers of our state over the partisan politics that have defined their tenure in majority.”

It is estimated that 1 in 5 Michigan restaurants will shut down and as many as 60,000 Michigan restaurant workers will lose their jobs in the immediate aftermath, should the Republican-led tipped wage fix not pass the Democrat-controlled Senate.
