Will Senate Democrats Get on Board?

Lansing, MI – Today, House Republicans passed a bipartisan plan to cut the state income tax.

The plan reverses the income tax hike from last term’s Democrat trifecta and lets Michigan families keep more hard-earned dollars in their pockets. Now the plan is on its way to the Senate where it faces an unknown fate.

“Cost of living concerns have been top of mind for Michigan families for years. For many, it feels like costs keep climbing and dollars keep shrinking by the day. The House Republican tax cut is a pro-family, pro-worker, common-sense plan that will let every Michigander keep more of what they earn,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “Families don’t build their incomes based on their budgets, they build their budgets based on their incomes – government should do the same. State spending has increased 43% since Governor Whitmer took office. If Senate Democrats can’t get behind a bipartisan tax cut that amounts to less than 1% of state spending, then shame on them.”

A House Fiscal Agency analysis of the tax cut said the plan would “cost” state government just over $700 million, which would be less than 1% of the $83 billion budget passed under the Democrat Trifecta.
