Lansing, MI – Two years ago Lansing lawmakers gave a $666.1 million handout towards a GM project, which was supposed to “create” thousands of new jobs. But now GM is abandoning the project, and asking taxpayers for more.
This week General Motors announced they are walking away from their commitment to Michigan taxpayers and selling their stake in the Delta Township battery plant to LG Energy Solutions. This latest development is noteworthy, given that GM is simultaneously asking state lawmakers for a quarter billion dollar handout to help tear down skyscrapers in downtown Detroit.
“Michiganders are sick and tired of this same old game in Lansing. Lawmakers give billions of tax dollars to big corporations like GM who come up short on empty promises, but they fail to adequately invest in our local roads and school safety,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “Michigan voters spoke loud and clear this election: They’re done watching the government ignore their day-to-day concerns while the well-connected get taken care of. It’s time for Lansing to get back to the basics and abandon this failed corporate welfare agenda.”
Republicans in Lansing know it’s time to put taxpayers first. That’s why they’re offering a roads funding plan that repurposes these corporate welfare dollars towards fixing local roads.
