Lansing, MI – Last week Governor Whitmer’s budget proposal called on the state to “get smart on education,” directing schools to tell parents about poor curriculum and testing.

If the Governor really wants to bring more accountability to education, she should reconsider a number of her previous actions under the Democrat trifecta, including:

  • Repealing A-F School rating: Michigan used to have a public transparent rating system for all Michigan schools, but Whitmer and Democrats eliminated the system altogether, leaving parents in the dark.
  • Repealing the 3rd-Grade Reading Law: State law used to ensure students had the tools for success throughout their learning careers. But Democrats repealed key 3rd-grade reading standards, and our kids are already paying the price.
  • Weakening Teacher Evaluations: Teachers used to be heavily evaluated based on their student’s academic performance. But Democrats revamped teacher evaluations, making them far less dependent on student outcomes.

“For years, we’ve seen declines in student success despite record funding. If we want better for our kids, it’s going to take more than rhetoric or dollars. We simply need Lansing to reprioritize student success again,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “If Lansing reinstates these common-sense measures, we will see more transparency and accountability in schools across the Great Lakes State, and our kids will have the tools for success for the rest of their lives.”

Lansing Republicans have championed restoring these measures from day one, and support plans that unlock new paths to success for students outside a traditional four-year degree route.
