In Wake of Bribery Allegations, Tinsley-Talabi Should be Stripped of Committee Assignments

Minority Leader Tim Greimel Must Request Democratic Lawmaker Be Replaced on Committees Immediately

LANSING, MI, October 5, 2015 – The Michigan Freedom Fund today called on House Minority Leader Tim Greimel to formally request state Rep. Alberta Tinsley-Talabi be removed from her House Committee assignments after being accused of accepting bribes and implicated last week in a federal corruption probe.

Tinsley-Talabi’s former Chief of Staff, George Stanton, pleaded guilty to accepting bribes and federal prosecutors confirmed to members of the media last week that they are actively investigating the sitting lawmaker’s role in the scandal.

The Democrat has been implicated in a longstanding Detroit pension board corruption investigation after allegedly accepting thousands of dollars in payouts and a trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands from an individual with business before the board, according to federal prosecutors.

“Michigan voters can’t trust Alberta Tinsley-Talabi,” said Freedom Fund President Terri Reid. “With federal prosecutors actively investigating whether or not she accepted bribes to influence the way she directed public policy, she is the last person who should be sitting in a House committee, crafting legislation. Minority Leader Tim Greimel should do the right thing and formally request today that Tinsley-Talabi be replaced on each of her committees until prosecutors resolve these staggering allegations.”

Tinsley-Talabi sits on the House Agriculture, Families, Children and Seniors, and Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
