Lansing, MI – Today Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist is expected to formally launch his campaign for Governor, teeing up what’s expected to be a messy primary with Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Sheriff Chris Swanson, and possibly more.
But as Gilchrist rolls out his campaign, Michigan taxpayers have questions (and he’d be wise not to dodge them as he’s done in the past):
- Is Gilchrist still “sick of Evangelicals kissing Israel’s ass…in the name of defense,” as he tweeted in 2009?
- Why did Gilchrist ignore warnings about Benton Harbor’s water lead levels, prompting the city to file an emergency petition seeking federal intervention?
- Why was Gilchrist late on property taxes for a blighted apartment building in Detroit?
- How could Gilchrist afford to live in a $1.9 million luxury apartment on his Lieutenant Governor salary?
- Did Gilchrist ever concede his 2017 loss for Detroit City Clerk after requesting a recount and raising the red flag on multiple vote tabulation concerns?
“Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist has an unfortunate history of dodging tough questions, but he can only ignore what’s on the mind of Michigan voters for so long,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “Gilchrist has taken troubling stances, questionable actions, and committed derelictions of duty in his role as LG. If Gilchrist wants to stand tall for Michigan, he can start with the truth about his record.”
