Lansing, MI – Did you spend more this year than last year on school supplies? Republicans have a plan to lower your costs, but Democrats aren’t interested.
House Republicans have a plan to implement a “back to school” tax holiday, which would temporarily lift the sales tax on school supplies for Michigan families. Sadly, Democrats have buried the plan in committee despite Governor Whitmer’s support of the concept just 2 years ago. It is probably a total coincidence that Whitmer was running for reelection at the time.
“Lansing has an opportunity to get more resources in the hands of students and lower costs for hard-working Michigan families. But unfortunately, Democrats appear more interested in stripping schools of their safety resources,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director of the Michigan Freedom Fund. “Prices are up 21% since Biden and Harris took office. If now isn’t the time to lower costs for Michigan families, when is?”
In addition to the 92% cut in mental health and school safety resources, Michigan Democrats have made schools less transparent, less accountable, and less successful at equipping students with the skills they need to be successful in the future.
“Democrats talk a big game on education, but their actions in Lansing are putting our students on a path towards failure,” Rudat continued. “We need a new path for Michigan that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and student success.”
