Lansing, MI – While Governor Whitmer continues to undermine the voice of 270,000 Michiganders, an anniversary today reminds us just how politically motivated her inaction really is.
On this date two years ago, Representatives Peter Herzberg and Mai Xiong won special elections to fill vacancies in safe Democrat State House districts, restoring the previous Democrat Trifecta in Lansing. Whitmer was quick to announce these special elections, as she traditionally has when doing so is in Democrats’ best interest.
But when a special election threatens her power in Lansing, she’s always dragged her feet, creating a partisan double standard that’s reached historic proportions with the Senate District 35 vacancy.
“Today’s a sad reminder of how blatantly partisan Whitmer has approached her responsibilities as Governor. Instead of pursuing the best interests of Michigan, she has used her office and our tax dollars to protect and preserve her own political power,” said Zach Rudat, Advocacy Director for Michigan Freedom Fund. “Governor Whitmer claims she wants a “just and equal society.” She campaigned on the premise that every Michigander should have a “fair shot at opportunity.” But today, her negligence of duty is sidelining 270,000 Michiganders, leaving taxpayers with a diminished voice in their own government. It’s unjust, unfair, and needs to be corrected ASAP.”
For over 100 days the Great Lakes Bay Region has waited on Governor Whitmer to take action and restore their voice. Meanwhile, State Representative Bill Schuette has proposed a 50% tax deduction for Michiganders lacking half their representation in Lansing.
