Thousands of Students Still Forced to Endure Masking Requirements While Whitmer and Other Democrats Get to Choose When Not to Mask
LANSING, MI – The Michigan Freedom Fund again called on Governor Gretchen Whitmer to end the forced masking of students across the state today. Earlier this week, Whitmer went maskless at an indoor event and the following day her administration suddenly rescinded guidance recommending masks in schools.
While local health departments have slowly begun moving to lift mask requirements, the deliberate delays are enabling school districts to impose their own mask mandates. Students in Detroit, Lansing, East Lansing, Saginaw, Ypsilanti and other school districts across the state are still subjected to forced masking in the classroom, even as mask mandates have been lifted in other parts of their communities.
“Governor Whitmer’s revised guidance doesn’t go far enough, and leaves too many children forced to mask up in classrooms across Michigan,” said Michigan Freedom Fund executive director Tori Sachs. “While Whitmer and other Democrats get to choose when not to wear a mask, thousands of Michigan students have been denied that same choice.
“Some school districts are requiring forced masking while others are not; some schools are treating vaccinated and unvaccinated kids differently. Our kids are still suffering academically and emotionally. Whitmer must end the hypocrisy and half-measures and use her bully pulpit to demand an end to school mask mandates and all these other nonsensical restrictions and rules once and for all.”
Tori Sachs also wrote in The Detroit News: Opinion: Michigan’s school mask mandates should be a thing of the past:
“Instead of giving control of our kids to local school officials, it’s time to respect kids and put parents back in charge.
“Michigan children can’t wait, as each day another child falls further behind academically or deeper into depression, anxiety, or worse.
“Across the nation, states are beginning to catch up with what parents have been saying for years: Mask mandates don’t protect kids in school — they hurt them.”
On Fox 2 Detroit’s “Let it Rip” Sachs also said:
“Democrats like Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, and Attorney General Dana Nessel all haven’t worn a mask in the last week at various events inside. It’s time to end the forced masking of all of our children. Let them decide and let their parents decide if they should have to wear a mask in school.”
